Sunbeds and Tanning Salons
Ultraviolet (UV) tanning equipment are now commonplace in many hairdressers, gyms, beauty salons etc. in addition to being available for hire for home use. Any exposure to UV radiation from tanning equipment is potentially harmful.
What do you need to know
- The Sunbeds (Regulation) Act 2010 regulates the use of sunbeds in commercial business premises. The information on this page aims to help operators of sunbed businesses to comply with the law.
- The Act applies to all commercial premises who offer sunbeds for use on the premises. The Act does not apply to you if the premises are used as a private home.
- Since 2011 it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 years:
- to use a sunbed
- be offered the use of a sunbed
- be present in a restricted zone
