Asbestos management for businesses

Asbestos is the greatest single cause of work-related deaths.

Asbestos-related diseases (mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer) are thought to kill up to 3,000 people each year, with these figures expected to rise.

Find out more from the Health and Safety Executive about asbestos, how to identify it, and how to safely remove it.

How to find a licensed contractor to remove asbestos

You can find a list of contractors that are licensed to work with asbestos on the  Health and Safety Executive website.

Asbestos management for households

Common locations where asbestos is found in the home include:

  • on garage or shed roofs
  • on shed and garage wall panels
  • on drain pipes
  • on insulation board soffit, infill panels and partitions
  • on the side of bath panels
  • However, there may be other areas too in your home.

Normally asbestos will not be a problem if it is in good condition. If it is damaged, broken, drilled, cut or sanded, small fibres can be released which can give rise to long term health problems.

If in doubt leave well alone and seek expert help and advice. A number of licensed asbestos contractors can be found online.
