Cheslyn Hay, UK – Claire Lawrence, owner of The Barber Station, has experienced a remarkable transformation in her business journey thanks to the South Staffs Council’s business growth programme, Strive for Success funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The initiative has provided Claire with essential tools, support, and training opportunities, enabling her to build confidence and expand her skill set.
Claire, who has been a barber for over 20 years, initially ran a barber shop before taking a full-time position at Featherstone Prison. After 13 years of service, she left due to medical reasons and pursued her passion by opening The Barber Station in January 2020. Unfortunately, the pandemic struck soon after, forcing her to temporarily close. Undeterred, Claire invested heavily in her business, transforming it into a high-end barber shop and hair salon with a sleek finish.
Despite her dedication, Claire faced challenges, including difficulties with marketing and content creation due to dyslexia. Additionally, she sought ways to support her staff’s training and develop her own business skills in HR, marketing, and strategic planning. Seeking guidance, she joined the Strive for Success programme, where she quickly gained confidence and practical business knowledge.
“The business growth workshop was incredibly engaging, and I acquired valuable insights to propel my small business forward,” Claire shared. “Thanks to this program, I’ve enrolled in an assessor course and a teaching course, which I wouldn’t have considered otherwise. I now feel optimistic about the future of my business.”
Through Strive for Success, Claire was introduced to AI tools like ChatGPT to help manage her social media content, overcoming a major hurdle in marketing. She also connected with the Creating Brighter Futures team, which supported her training needs. Claire has now achieved her Level 3 AET in adult education and training, qualifying her to train future barbers.
Claire has also been nominated for the Staffordshire Retail Business Awards 2025 in the category of Best Barbers, a great achievement for The Barber Station.
With newfound confidence, Claire has also secured a grant application to further improve her shop front. The support she received has not only transformed her business but has also allowed her to give back to the community by mentoring and training aspiring barbers.
Councillor Mark Evans, Cabinet Member for Planning and Enterprise Services, said “Strive for Success is a long-term growth journey of advice, support and collaboration, building sustainable and enduring relationship with businesses. Our goal is to ensure this collaboration continues to thrive long after the programme concludes, fostering resilience and growth that benefits the entire community for years to come.”
The Strive for Success programme continues to empower small business owners like Claire, providing them with the skills and confidence to grow and thrive in an ever-evolving industry
